Bye bye Carr? Falcons agree to deal backup QB Schaub to Houston

(courtesy ESPN & Len Pasquarelli)

ATLANTA -- In a move that figures to have significant ramifications for the incumbent starters from both teams, the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday agreed in principle to trade three-year veteran quarterback Matt Schaub to the Houston Texans.
When the trade is completed, Atlanta and Houston will flip-flop first-round picks in April's draft, and Atlanta will receive Houston's second-round picks in 2007 and 2008. The deal likely will be completed later Wednesday afternoon. Houston has the No. 8 pick in the first round of the draft, while Atlanta is slotted 10th.
Sources told ESPN.com that the trade is contingent upon the Texans reaching agreement with Schaub on a contract, and negotiations have already begun.
In acquiring Schaub, the Texans have ostensibly conceded that five-year veteran David Carr, the top overall player chosen in the 2002 draft and a quarterback in whom Houston has invested considerable time and money, is no longer their quarterback of the future. At the same time, the departure of Schaub indicates that new Falcons coach Bobby Petrino is sold on Michael Vick, who is said to have made a strong impression on the rookie sideline boss in their first few months working together.
Schaub, 25, has been the subject of trade rumors for each of the past two springs. ESPN.com reported last Friday in its "Tip Sheet" column that Falcons officials seemed prepared to begin listening to trade offers for him and had begun discussing possible replacements.
One of the strong candidates to replace Schaub as the backup to Vick, ESPN.com has learned, is Anthony Wright, who played with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2006.
Despite starting only two games in three seasons and winning neither of them, Schaub is highly regarded around the NFL. The former Virginia standout, a third-round pick by Atlanta in 2004, has completed 84 of 161 passes for 1,033 yards, with six touchdown passes and six interceptions.
Schaub was a restricted free agent this spring and the Falcons made him the highest qualifying offer possible, at $2.3 million. That qualifying offer meant that, had another team signed Schaub to an offer sheet, and Atlanta not matched it, the Falcons would have received first- and third-round draft choices as compensation.

More trouble for Joey Porter

Former Pittsburgh Steelers standout and current Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter was cited by Las Vegas police for misdemeanor battery after he allegedly punched another NFL player in the face Sunday night, according to a published report.
Porter
The Las Vegas Review Journal is reporting that Porter was cited for an alleged fight he had with Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Levi Jones.
"Apparently these two have a history with each other, a history of trash talking on the field," Las Vegas police Lt. Kevin McMahill told the paper.
Jones was treated by medical personnel at the scene, McMahill said.
Porter recently signed a five-year, $32 million deal with the Dolphins after being released by the Steelers.
In his eight-year career, Porter has 60 sacks and 10 interceptions.

NFL Mock Draft - Top 10

Everybody has their opinion on the draft...here is the humble prognostication of Doc Sports:

1. Oakland Raiders - JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSUThe Raiders aren't as far away as you think. I know that seems ridiculous, but with healthy skill players and that defense the Raiders can at least compete and are about two years away from being a playoff threat. Remember, the team that picked No. 2 last year made the NFC Championship this year, so it is possible. They need linemen and would be best served by trading this pick. But the allure of Russell's Rocket Arm is too appealing. I just hope they don't put him behind that offensive line, which may be the worst I've ever seen.
2. Detroit Lions - Joe Thomas, OT, WisconsinThe irony here is beautiful - they need receivers or else having Mike Martz is like having Ron Howard guest direct an episode of "The OC". But Matt Millen knows better than to take Calvin Johnson. At least I think he does. None of Millen's offensive line free agents have panned out so it's time to start building through the draft.
3. Cleveland Browns - Jamaal Anderson, DE, ArkansasEveryone's thinking Brady Quinn here. And there's a good chance the Romeo-Weis connection will lead to a Quinn pick. But that would be a mistake. Romeo is a defensive guy at heart and will try to bolster a very below-average defensive line. The Brownies have managed just 51 sacks over the past two years, worst in the NFL, and I'll give you a malnourished donkey if you can name me their starting DEs. I say they take this Beast of a Man and give Charlie Frye one more year.
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia TechMichael Clayton has been slightly more effective at wideout than John Clayton over the past two seasons. Chucky had Rice and Brown in Oakland, and I'm sure he's salivating at the thought of picking up the physical specimen that is Johnson.
5. Arizona Cardinals - Alan Branch, DT, MichiganI think the Cardinals would pimp out Matt Leinhart to fat chicks and executives for the Lions, Browns and Bucs for the two months leading up to draft day if it meant they had a shot at Joe Thomas. They don't. But Branch is an outstanding consolation prize. The Cards won't get out of the Joke Box until they toughen up in the front seven. Injuries have limited a rather limited front four, so they should opt for the guy with unlimited potential.
6. Washington Redskins - Leon Hall, CB, MichiganThe offensive line isn't getting any younger, but last year the Redskins fell apart because they looked like the Over-The-Hill Gang from the 70's. I don't mean that as a compliment. In fact, I think one of the starters from Washington's 1974 defense started last year at safety. Oh, wait. That was just Troy Vincent. My bad.
7. Minnesota Vikings - Brady Quinn, QB, Notre DameYou want to talk about being at the right place at the right time? This is like catching that queen on the river to crack aces with a set. And I say 'queen' because Quinn hasn't shown me much against top-flight competition. Tell me he isn't a New Age Rick Mirer and I don't know if I'll believe you. But the Vikes need a quarterback for the future, Quinn gets Mel Kiper Jr. wet, and Brad Johnson gets someone to lecture about the virtues of mediocrity to.
8. Houston Texans - LaRon Landry, S, LSUThe smart money says that they try to correct last year's mistake by taking Adrian Peterson. I say Gary Kubiak tells you to take the smart money and shove it up your ass. If he didn't take Bush he's not taking Peterson. I think a defensive playmaker in the secondary or along the D-line has to be No. 1 on the wish list.
9. Miami Dolphins - Amobi Okoye, DT, LouisvilleIt's tough to project who the Dolphins are going after because they have a lot of holes on defense and that offensive line. But I heard that Okoye impressed a lot of people down in Miami during Super Bowl week. The geriatric crew of Vonnie Holiday, Keith Traylor and Jeff Zgonina are all unrestricted free agents so the Fins need to get some fresh meat up front.
10. Atlanta Falcons - Gaines Adams, DE, ClemsonThe Falcons need secondary help worse than Mike Vick needs herpes ointment. But with Patrick Kearney starting to break down and Falcons brass coming to the stunning realization that John Abraham can never be counted on - ever - the Gaines pick makes sense. He's from a Southern school, and the natives always see that as a plus.

Hot Rumor: One team aggressive in discussing trade for Moss

GREEN BAY, Wisc. -- The Green Bay Packers' leadership is expected to discuss a potential trade for wide receiver Randy Moss when it meets on Tuesday.
A trade sending Moss from the Oakland Raiders to Green Bay is already in discussion stages, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported, saying according to an unnamed league source, general manager Ted Thompson has already been in direct talks with Raiders owner Al Davis about the move. According to sources, the teams have discussed the trade for a month and the Packers have been given permission to talk to Moss' agent about restructuring his contract.
"They're going to get rid of him," the source said, according to the Journal-Sentinel. "I think they think they can trade him. And I know Green Bay has interest."
Thompson has refused to discuss whether he would deal for Moss. The newspaper reported Tim DiPiero, Moss's agent, was unavailable for comment.
"Ted has not spent a lot of time talking to me about it, quite honestly," Packers chairman of the board Bob Harlan told the Journal-Sentinel. "Ted always starts out our meetings with a football report so he may get into that."
Harlan told the newspaper he has been taking calls, faxes and e-mails from Packers fans on the possible trade, with negative responses still outnumbering the positive. "I'd say it's been maybe 65-35 percent [anti-Moss]," Harlan said. He also said the Packers remain concerned about player character issues and public perception of the team as a classy organization.
"One man wrote, 'Moody. Excess baggage. Disruptive. Do any of these words sound like alarm bells to you?' " Harlan told the Journal-Sentinel. "One guy called from out of state and said, 'Bob, I'd rather see you go 0-16 than do that.' Isn't that something?"
But not all the feedback on Moss is negative, he added.
"People say to me, 'Brett [Favre] needs a big target. I know he's got baggage but he's never hurt anybody,' " Harlan told the newspaper. "Today, they were all, 'Take a chance.'"

My take: Boy - haven't things come full circle? Moss possibly playing next season against the team that took a chance on him? Well...if anyone (and anything) can find a way to motivate Moss into being the player that he was back in the late 90s, it would have to be Favre and playing against the Vikings twice a year. I think this one is going to happen.

More intriguing transactions

Browns trade running back Droughns to Giants

My take: If you didn't see this coming, then you also didn't think T.O. would be a distraction in Dallas. Tiki retires, Brandon Jacobs is more of a fullback, Browns sign Jamal Lewis, Droughns now expendable. Good deal for NY, average for Cleveland as far as getting Tim Carter, a mediocre receiver at best.

Jake Plummer officially announces retirement

My take: I think Jake IS serious...for now. My money is on him coming back next year so he can try to go out on a better note. Plummer is too competetive to hang it up this early, and there will be teams knocking on his door.

Raiders sign Dominic Rhodes and Justin Griffith

My take: LaMont Jordan must feel pretty secure after today's signings. Oakland now has Jordan, Fargas, Rhodes and Griffith - safe to say it won't be that way come late July.

3.08.2007

Intriguing NFL transactions and rumors

Willis McGahee is traded to Baltimore in exchange for 3 draft picks. The Ravens then offer Willis $40.12 million dollar contract.

My take: Greener pastures for McGahee indeed. Great replacement for Jamal Lewis, with a much better upside. Buffalo had given up on McGahee and was ready to move on, and three picks more than make Marv Levy happy. Definitely a win-win.

Joe Horn signs with the Atlanta Falcons

My take: With his age, i'm not sure Horn will be that much of an offensive threat. Atlanta most likely wants him to mentor their young receivers, with anything else being gravy.

Jamal Lewis signs with the Cleveland Browns

My take: Offers about as much as what Reuben Droughns gives you - a lot of carries, not a whole lot of yards, and past legal problems. Seems like passing on Lewis and taking Adrian Peterson makes more sense. Bad news for Lewis: no longer gets to shred the Browns' D for 200+ yards...unless it's in practice.

Trent Green is asked to either take a salary cut or seek out a trade

My take: Green had his share of problems last season, and didn't play very well when he did come back. I'm not sure that Damon Huard is the future, but he seems like a better option at this point than Green. It would have been interesting to see how deep the Chiefs would have gone if Huard remained the starter.

Randy Moss on the trading block, with possible suitors being New England, Atlanta and Green Bay.

My take: WHY would you roll the dice on this guy at this point in his career? Yes, the Raiders are a mess, but Moss hardly put out maximum effort over the season. Any team taking this guy is asking for problems (See: T.O.).
